New to camping? Seasoned camper? Things worth knowing, and getting to know your Slumit before you plan your trip..
Get Prepared:
1. Please ensure you read through the pitch instructions (provided inside the carry case) and the check list & assembly instructions provided with our dispatch email carefully before use. download (.pdf 86k)
2. Check and practice pitching & packing your new tent several times before your excursion. Familiarising yourself with your tent will save valuble time out in the field, especially if pitching late at night in poor lighting conditions.
3. Consider a compatible Footprint / Ground Protector to be used with your tent (sold separately).
Pitching your Slumit tent on top of a Slumit Footprint Stone Ground Protector will reduce wear and tear on your tents integrated ground sheet. With a tough 3000mm polyurethane coating, the Slumit Footprint helps shield your integrated groundsheet from abrasion, dirt and saturated ground. Using a Footprint will also enhance ground insulation.
4. Most of the outerfly seams have been thermobonded factory taped sealed, to reduce the chances of water penetration. Due to production methods and materials used, it is not always possible to make every sewn seam watertight. Stitched seams that can not be factory sealed due to the heated thermobonded applicator (will cause the following materials to melt) are: zippers, zipper teeth and velcro. Taped seams will also deteriorate over time whether out in the field or packed away. For this reason, specialist affordable seam sealant applicators are available and can be easily applied to these stitched areas if required. Unless a sealant is applied to these areas, it is not unusual for exposed areas to become saturated in periods of rainfall which may drip with water. Please contact us for further advice, alternatively there are excellent specialist seam sealant products/applicators available on the market.
5. Plan your trip thoroughly, especially the weather. Dry conditions may be forecasted, but check the wind! Check the UK wind forecast here (to be used as a guide only). Wind can be the most problematic of all the elements to a tents structure and to your overall camping experience. To make sure that you are best prepared for unexpected bad weather, pitch in a sheltered spot where available. It is important to ensure that the tent is taut and pegged firmly into the ground using appropriate ground pegs (standard turf pegs are supplied with the tent), guylines are secured properly, and frame joints locked. Our tents are fit for purpose and have been factory and field tested to withstand winds of up to 25mph. Exposure outside of normal fitting conditions may result in failure and/or damage to your tent and equipment, of which is not covered under The Slumit Company warranty.
NOTE: We would strongly advise that you purchase comprehensive tent / camping equipment insurance. Some insurance companies will include storm damage, fire and theft within their cover, which are not covered under our warranty. see warranty terms and conditions.
In the Field:
1. Choose a sheltered pitch. Ensure the tent is erected as per the instructions provided. See pitching tips & advice.
2. Regularly check ground pegs and guy ropes to ensure that they are fully secure and taut.
3. Do not expose a tent to naked flames. All our tents do have flame retardant protected fabrics, however this will not stop your tent from burning or melting if exposed to a heat source or naked flame. Please take great care when using heated appliances in and around a tent.
4. Make sure your tent is fully dry from rain and moisture before collapsing and packing away. Failure to remove moisture from the fabrics may cause mildew to form, which will damage the tents protective qualities and is foul smelling.
TIP! Pack an old towel that you can use to wipe away any moisture before packing. If you are unable to pack your tent due to rainy conditions, loosly pack your tent for your journey and repitch it as soon as possible. Leave to air-dry before storing. Store in a cool dry place. Do not place anything on top of the tent when in storage.
